State-of-the-Art Solution
With an unparalleled performance in accuracy and precision, the Herzog HVM 472 Viscometer automatically determines the kinematic viscosity of transparent and opaque liquids in full compliance to ASTM D 445 (IP 71) and ISO 3104 while exceeding their stated precisions.
Product Overview
The Herzog Multi-Range Viscometer HVM 472 determines direct kinematic viscosity of transparent and opaque liquids fully automated. The easy to operate viscometer includes 2 multi-range capillaries with 100 fold measuring range, requires only 18 ml, and delivers precise results. Its 26 positions per bath autosampler offers truly continuous operation, spent sample vials automatically discharge, allowing new samples to be added at any time. For rapid analysis within viscosity range of 0.5 to 600mm2/s, the HVM 472 offers the smart alternative to run samples using 20-fold range Fast Run (FR) capillaries. The HVM 472 shows excellent precision and accuracy in full compliance with ASTM D445 and ISO 3104.

Test Methods & Precision
Standard Test Methods:
ASTM D445 (IP 71 Section 1), ISO 3104, ASTM D446 per section 1.3, ISO 3015
Operation
Analytical principle:
Kinematic Viscosity by Glass Capillary (Atlantic Multirange Or Fast Run-Type)
Sample Volume: Standard: 18 ml
Fast Run: 4 ml
Sample Preheating:
For samples with Pour Point up to 70 °C (at 100 °C bath temperature) such as bunker oils, bitumen, and waxes.
Optional preheating stations with programmable temperature settings from +40° to +110 °C (68 – 230°F). Without IRIS Software program, all samples are preheated to the selected temperature and duration. With IRIS Software, each sample can be individually programmed to be preheated or not over a certain time.
Sample Induction:
Via integrated 26-position auto samplers (one per bath), with automatic sample drawing directly from vials — no external vacuum pumps required.
Cycle Time and Throughput:
25 -35 min per test (typical, incl. cleaning), 2 test runs in simultaneously (at same or two different temperature)
Capillaries:
Multi-range capillary tubes, with nominal range of 100-fold (typical flow times from 60 to 400 seconds) and 12 gradings. Optional fast run capillary tubes, with nominal range of 20-fold (typical flow times from 25 to 100 seconds).
The HVM472 can operate mix of standard Atlantic Multirange capillary tube and Fast Run tube simultaneously
Meniscus Detection/Timing:
By Thermistor (NTC): Applicable to nearly all types of clear samples, as well as high level carbon or stable emulsion (dark) samples. Repeatability better or equal to ASTM D445. Herzog NTC sensors are automatically calibrated and do not require an individual training.
Bath Temperature:
Stability: ±0.01°C (±0.03°C for test T°C above 100°C). Proportional heating control and high velocity bath media circulation. Resolution 0.001°C. , Factory pre-calibrated at +40°C and + 100°C temperature points
Bath Media: Silicone oil, 2 x 5 liters.
Bath Cabinet/Chassis:
All wetted materials are made of steel, baked epoxy resin coated: electromagnetic isolation, solvent resistant. The system incorporates brass parts and is not designed to handle corrosive samples or solvents that destroy brass. All glass baths with transparent plastic heat-touch protection.
Cleaning/Drying Mode:
Standard: Automated dual solvent system with user programmable configuration.
Optional: Two additional solvents.
Low solvent usage (10 ml per cycle avg; selectable from 0 – 9 cycles per solvent); gravity intake and discharge (no external vacuum pump required); built-in automatic detection of cleaning solvent availability; Kalrez® seals compatible with aggressive solvents, including acetone.
Application Range
Viscosity Range
Standard Atlantic: 0.5 to 5000 cst (mm²/s) at 40°C (68°F); 0.5 – 2000 mm2/s at 100°C (212°F), Fast Run: 0,5 – 600 mm2/s at 40/100°C (68/212°F)
Temperature range: User programmable from 20 – 150°C (68 – 302 F)
DATA MANAGEMENT & INTERFACES
Documentation:
Test Results Database
Stand-alone mode: local memory storage of up to 400 test results. The previous 400 test results are maintained in the local database by the “first in, first out” principle.
IRIS Software based mode: test results database only limited by the memory space of the PC hard disk.
Keyboard and Display:
Graphic LCD display for results, menus and status information reporting and tactile alphanumeric keyboard with password protection for menus navigation & data inputs (by single/multiple strokes of the keypad, similar in function to cellular phones).
Printer and PC:
Paper roll 40 column printer or any ASCII compatible inkjet printer for A4/letter format sheets.
PC required only when the IRIS Software program is used. Any Windows® compatible PC and printer can be used.
IRIS Software®:
Compatible with IRIS Software. Operates and links together Herzog automatic viscosity analyzers HVM472 with central measurement program and results storage/database management. All data collected/stored by IRIS Software automatically transmits via RS 232 to external LIMS. User may customize output format using preferred field delimiters. System PC can function as workstation on LAN and move/share data via file transfer or OLE with other Windows applications. (Such as MS Excel)
UTILITIES REQUIREMENTS
Voltage: 100V ± 10%, 115V ±10% and 230 VAC ±10%, selectable by clamping.
Frequency: 50 to 60 Hz

QUALITY AND SAFETY FEATURES
Calibration and Diagnostics:
Real time status display and control for all mechanical and electrical systems locally or with optional PC network.
HLIS features a comprehensive diagnostic program, which allows to check every key component and assembly, together with a self-correction sample temperature measuring system that automatically compensates for amplifier drifts. Temperature probe deviation can be corrected by 10 user-selected temperature offset points. The internal timing device can be checked by a verification menu. The HVM instruments can be calibrated with PAC standard CRM fluids
Bath Safety:
Bath over-temperature and -level protection. HVM471 Baths have hot surface protection provided by outer acrylic cover tube. A special slop sensor for the waste reservoir is available as an accessory in order to prevent the analyzer from waste reservoir over-filling (slop valve switch-off when the current measuring cycle is complete). An extra NIR meniscus detection prevents from sample flow in the valve system.
